dc.description.abstract The advancement of satellite-based wireless information technology has now expanded into the maritime transport sector, becoming a critical component of the seafaring ecosystem. PT Asian Bulk Logistics (ABL) has integrated Starlink satellite internet aboard its fleet, specifically on the Floating Crane (FC) Bulk Natuna, to bolster operational productivity and navigational safety. Nevertheless, the deployment of this digital network still encounters practical technical bottlenecks on-site, and the distinct information-seeking behaviors of the crew have not been thoroughly mapped. This descriptive qualitative study aims to explore the technical constraints of onboard internet usage while delineating a clear framework of the information requirements for PT ABL's seafarers. Data collection was carried out through field observations, archiving internal IT division compliance logs, and conducting semi-structured interviews with informants across various ranks onboard. Furthermore, the dataset was rigorously examined using a SWOT matrix framework to formulate strategic alternative solutions. The empirical findings reveal two primary challenges: constrained Wi-Fi signal distribution that fails to cover areas outside the living quarters such as the engine room, workshop, and forecastle deck and a severe drop in connection speeds during evening hours driven by high personal traffic density. Conversely, the configuration of the crew's information demands is bisected into operational cognitive needs (compliance reporting via the A’M Care and Spinergie applications) and personal affective needs (family correspondence and digital entertainment for psychological decompression). As actionable solutions, this research recommends installing additional indoor Wireless Access Points (Ruijie RG-RAP2260) alongside heavy-duty outdoor units certified with IP68 extreme weather protection (Ruijie RG-RAP6262G). Additionally, deploying a Multi-WAN automatic failover network architecture and drafting an adaptive, transparent internet usage Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) are highly advised. Executive execution of these strategic measures is anticipated to harmonize corporate operational viability with data privacy safeguards and the mental well-being of the mariners. en_US
