The injector is one of the vital components in the combustion system of the diesel main
engine, which functions to spray fuel into the combustion chamber in the form of a fine
mist so that combustion can take place optimally. Decreased injector performance can
have a serious impact on engine efficiency, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions.
This study aims to analyze the main causes of declining injector performance in KM
main engines. Doro Londa, with a focus on two dominant factors, namely blockages in
the nozzle and low fuel quality.
The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection
techniques in the form of direct observation, interviews with ship engineers, and
documentation during sea practice. The data was analyzed using a case study and
problemsolving approach, and supported by log book data and ship manuals. The results
showed that injector nozzle clogging is generally caused by incomplete combustion due
to poor fuel quality and lack of periodic maintenance. In addition, the bunker process
that is not in accordance with procedures also causes dirt and water to enter the fuel
system.
As a solution, injector maintenance is carried out periodically through cleaning,
pressure testing, and replacement of components that have passed working hours. These
efforts have been proven to be able to restore injector performance and maintain the
work efficiency of the main engine. This research is expected to be a reference for ship
engine officers in carrying out combustion system maintenance, as well as making a
scientific contribution to the development of engine maintenance management in the
shipping world.
