SYSTEM (MGPS) FOR SMOOTH COOLING SYSTEM OPERATION IN MAIN
CONDENSOR ON SS.TRIPUTRA”
Marine Growth Prevention System (MGPS) is an important system on ships to prevent the
growth of marine biota and corrosion in the seawater cooling system. This research was
conducted on the SS. Triputra ship after a disturbance was found in the MGPS system that
affected the smooth cooling in the main condenser. The main problems identified included
damage to the PCB Card due to high temperatures, accumulation of sodium hypochlorite
crystals on the anode and cathode, and leakage in the Marine Growth Prevention System
output pipe due to scale and corrosion. The research method used was descriptive qualitative
with the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) approach, through direct observation, interviews with
the Machinist, and documentation and literature studies. The results showed that the main
factors of damage came from the lack of routine maintenance according to the Plan
Maintenance Schedule (PMS), low material quality, and irregularity in the supply of electric
current. As a result, the electrolysis process did not run optimally, inhibiting the production
of sodium hypochlorite, and triggering the growth of marine organisms and reducing
condenser efficiency. This study concluded that periodic maintenance, cleaning the anodecathode, checking the electrical system, and crew training are very important to maintain the
performance of the Marine Growth Prevention System. Recommendations for improvement
include increasing the discipline of implementing the Plan Maintenance System (PMS) and
using standard materials to improve the reliability of the cooling system on board the ship.
