The operational efficiency of oil tankers heavily depends on the performance of the
cargo handling system, particularly the Cargo Oil Pump (COP), which plays a vital role
during loading and unloading operations. This research was motivated by repeated failures
observed in the COP system aboard MT. Griya Enim during the author’s sea project, which
led to delays and potential economic losses. The main focus of this study is to analyze the
causes of COP failures, their impact on operational efficiency, and propose effective
maintenance strategies.
This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data
were collected through direct observation, interviews with ship crew members, and technical
documentation. The results identified three primary causes of COP failures: leakage in the
mechanical seal due to excessive vibration and insufficient lubrication; bearing damage
caused by irregular lubrication, contamination, and shaft misalignment; and overheating of
the electromotor resulting from the absence of an active cooling system and faulty
temperature sensors.
The impact of COP failures includes delayed discharge operations, disrupted sailing
schedules, and increased operational risks. Recommended strategies include routine
monitoring of temperature and vibration, scheduled lubrication, preventive component
replacement, enhancement of the cooling system, and regular calibration of temperature
sensors. This study concludes that structured maintenance programs and improved crew
technical awareness are essential to ensure COP reliability and enhance overall ship
efficiency.
