Air compressors are essential auxiliary machinery that play a crucial role in supporting
the smooth operation of the main engine on board a vessel. Any disruption in the air
compressor system can lead to reduced performance of the main engine starting system
and may affect overall ship operations. Therefore, an optimal maintenance system is
required to ensure that the air compressor operates effectively and continuously.
This study aims to identify the problems occurring in the air compressor system and
analyze efforts to optimize maintenance in order to improve the operational reliability of
the main engine on MV. Malahayati Baruna. The research method used is descriptive
qualitative, with a field study approach through direct observation, interviews, and
documentation during sea practice.
The results show that the main problems in the air compressor system are caused by
suboptimal implementation of periodic maintenance, corrosion in several components,
and lack of monitoring of the cooling and air filter systems. The proposed solutions
include improving the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), conducting routine
inspections, replacing worn-out components, and enhancing maintenance discipline
according to the manufacturer’s manual.
In conclusion, the optimization of air compressor maintenance significantly improves the
reliability of the compressed air system and supports the smooth operation of the main
engine on board. With a well-planned and scheduled maintenance system, the risk of
operational failure can be minimized. |
