Abstract

The Marine Growth Prevention System (MGPS) is an important system on board ships that functions to prevent marine organism growth, scale buildup, and corrosion in the sea water cooling system to maintain optimal engine performance. This study aims to analyze the causes of salt crystal deposits and marine growth accumulation on MGPS components and to evaluate the effect of Planned Maintenance System (PMS) implementation on the performance of the sea water cooling system on board SS. Triputra. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach through direct observation, interviews, documentation, and literature study during sea practice. The results showed that the accumulation of salt crystal deposits and marine growth on the anode and cathode plates of the MGPS caused the electrolysis process to run inefficiently, resulting in decreased sodium hypochlorite production. In addition, the implementation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), which was not yet optimal, caused several MGPS components to not receive periodic maintenance, thereby accelerating scale buildup and reducing the efficiency of the sea water cooling system. Improvement efforts were carried out through cleaning MGPS components, performing routine blowing and backwash, and increasing discipline in the implementation of PMS. Therefore, improving MGPS maintenance has a direct effect on the effectiveness of the sea water cooling system and supports the smooth operation of the ship.
