dc.description.abstract This study aims to analyze the causes of surging in the diesel engine generator turbocharger on board MV. Cosmo Gloria and to identify the factors contributing to turbocharger shaft damage and carbon deposit accumulation in the turbocharger housing. The surging phenomenon resulted in loud banging noises, increased exhaust gas temperatures, reduced generator performance, and potential mechanical damage to turbocharger components. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through direct observation during sea practice aboard MV. Cosmo Gloria, interviews with engine officers, documentation, and literature studies. Data analysis was conducted using the Fishbone Diagram to identify the root causes of the problem and the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method to determine the priority of corrective actions. The results indicate that surging in the generator turbocharger was influenced by damage to the rotor shaft and turbocharger bearings caused by irregular implementation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), deterioration of lubrication quality, and inadequate spare parts management. Furthermore, carbon deposits accumulated in the turbocharger housing due to weak PMS implementation, These conditions caused the lubricating oil temperature to increase and oil pressure to decrease, thereby threatening generator reliability and the continuity of the vessel’s electrical power supply. The study also found that inadequate maintenance management was a major contributing factor to the decline in turbocharger performance. Based on the findings, preventive measures include improving compliance with the Planned Maintenance System, conducting regular inspections and cleaning of the turbocharger, monitoring the lubrication system, enhancing spare parts management, and implementing Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM). These efforts are expected to maintain the reliability of the generator turbocharger and minimize the risk of surging occurrences en_US
