The auxiliary boiler is an essential auxiliary machine on board a ship that generates
steam for operational needs. The performance of the boiler greatly depends on the
combustion system, particularly the burner. One common issue is ignition failure, which can
reduce steam production and increase fuel consumption. This study analyzes the causes of
ignition failure in the auxiliary boiler of MV. Leonidas and evaluates the impact of
optimizing burner performance through a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) on
combustion efficiency. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through
observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review during sea practice from
August 2024 to August 2025. The results show that ignition failure is mainly caused by
decreased burner performance, especially the burner nozzle and ignition electrode, as well as
improper fuel pressure and temperature and air supply. The implementation of a well-
planned and consistent PMS has been proven to improve flame stability, enhance combustion
efficiency, and reduce fuel consumption. |
