The burner is a main component in a boiler system that functions to generate combustion
for steam production. On board MV. Ocean Hiryu, burner performance frequently experienced
disturbances, indicated by sudden burner shutdowns, unstable flame conditions, and blockages
in the nozzle and fuel filter. These problems were caused by inadequate burner maintenance and
poor fuel quality, which affected the smooth operation of the boiler. This study aims to identify
the causes of burner disturbances and determine maintenance optimization efforts to support
smooth boiler operation. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection
techniques including direct observation, interviews with engine crew, and documentation during
sea practice. Data analysis was conducted by identifying problems, analyzing causal factors, and
determining appropriate corrective actions. The results show that the main causes of burner
malfunction are dirty fuel filters, nozzle blockages, and the lack of optimal implementation of the
Planned Maintenance System (PMS). Optimization efforts include regular cleaning and
replacement of fuel filters, maintenance of nozzles and electrodes, improvement of fuel quality,
and consistent implementation of PMS. With proper maintenance, burner performance improves,
resulting in smoother, more efficient, and safer boiler operation. |
