Abstract:
The maritime transportation of dangerous goods is a high-risk activity that requires strict
compliance with international safety standards. The International Maritime Organization
(IMO) has established the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code)
as a mandatory framework for all vessels carrying hazardous cargo. However, two major
problems were identified in the operational practice aboard MV. Ever Outdo: insufficient
crew understanding of IMDG Code provisions, which creates potential hazards to work
safety, and the improper stowage of dangerous goods that does not fully comply with
IMDG Code standards. This study aims to assess the crew's level of understanding of the
IMDG Code and to evaluate the compliance of dangerous goods stowage in the cargo
hold. A qualitative descriptive research approach was employed, with data collected
through direct observation and document analysis during sea practice aboard MV. Ever
Outdo from August 2024 to August 2025. The findings indicate that a significant portion
of the crew only possesses a general understanding of working procedures without an in-
depth grasp of dangerous goods classification, segregation requirements, and emergency
response protocols. Furthermore, inconsistencies were found in the implementation of
segregation and stowage procedures, including improper placement of cargo without
regard for hazard class compatibility and inadequate verification of the bay plan and
dangerous goods manifest. This study concludes that the implementation of the IMDG
Code aboard MV. Ever Outdo requires improvement through regular training, more
rigorous operational supervision, and greater discipline in the use of dangerous goods
documentation to minimize accident risks and ensure navigational safety.
