Ships as maritime transportation vessels rely heavily on the performance of their
machinery systems to ensure smooth operations. One of the essential auxiliary systems
on board is the boiler system, which functions to generate steam for fuel heating and to
support the ship’s fuel system. The performance of the boiler is significantly influenced
by the boiler pump, which supplies water into the steam drum to maintain stable steam
pressure and volume. On board MT Griya Cirebon, a decline in boiler pump performance
was identified, indicated by an increase in operating temperature beyond the safe limit,
abnormal noise, and leakage. These conditions reflect mechanical disturbances that may
disrupt ship operations and therefore require comprehensive technical analysis. This
study aims to analyze the causes of the increased operating temperature of the boiler pump
beyond safe operating limits and to identify the factors contributing to leakage in the
pump system. Furthermore, this research seeks to determine appropriate maintenance and
repair measures to restore the boiler pump to optimal operating condition without further
leakage or performance issues. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method
with a case study and problem-solving approach. The study was conducted on board MT
Griya Cirebon, an Indonesian-flagged vessel registered in Jakarta (IMO 9279587).
Primary data were obtained through direct observation and interviews with the Fourth
Engineer, while secondary data were collected from documentation and literature studies,
including books, journals, and the centrifugal pump main feed water boiler manual. Data
collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation review. Data
analysis was carried out using the Cause-and-Effect Diagram Theory, Quality Control
Theory, and Root Cause Analysis Theory. The results indicate that the increase in the
boiler pump’s operating temperature was primarily caused by worn ball bearings, leading
to excessive friction, as well as the use of spare parts that did not meet the required
specifications. Leakage occurred due to shaft instability, which damaged the mechanical
seal, oil seal, and washer, compounded by corrosion of pump components. Corrective
actions included replacing the worn ball bearings and damaged components, along with
routine temperature monitoring. With proper maintenance and disciplined supervision,
the boiler pump’s performance was restored to stable and normal operating conditions
without leakage. |
