PERAWATAN PROBE FILTER UNTUK MENCEGAH PENURUNAN EFISIENSI EXHAUST GAS CLEANING SYSTEM DI KAPAL MV. PAN HARVEST

Abstract

This study aims to identify the causes of filter probe damage that reduce EGCS efficiency and to explain the consequences of crew unfamiliarity with maintaining the system on the MV Pan Harvest. The author conducted a ten-month sea service internship, spanning from September 12, 2024, to July 6, 2025. A descriptive qualitative research methode was employed. Primary data were gathered through direct observation and interviews with the Chief Engineer and other crew members, while secondary data were obtained from technical manuals, the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), and ship documentation. Data analysis utilized a fishbone diagram to identify contributing factors, followed by the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) methode to prioritize root causes and determine potential solutions. The findings indicate that the filter probe damage resulted from carbon buildup caused by a lack of routine cleaning and maintenance procedures that deviated from the manual, leading to the gas analyzer's failure to detect SO2 and CO2 levels in the exhaust gas. Meanwhile, the unfamiliarity stemmed from a lack of experience and the absence of EGCS-specific training prior to the crew's assignment on board. The adopted solutions involve executing maintenance work orders for the filter probe in accordance with the manual and providing EGCS training to crew members before they embark. Recommendations include scheduling periodic filter probe cleaning using compressed air as per the PMS, conducting EGCS training for engineers prior to boarding, and encouraging peer-to-peer familiarization among the crew to ensure faster and more accurate resolution of EGCS-related issues.
