UPAYA MENANGANI TEKANANA MUATAN PADA TANGKI SAAT DILAKUKAN BONGKAR MUAT DI KAPAL LNG/C LADY EVA

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the causes of high LNG cargo temperature received from the terminal and to identify factors contributing to the lack of knowledge and competence of the crew in managing the cargo handling system on board LNG/C Lady Eva. The research was conducted during the author's sea training on board LNG/C Lady Eva from August 2, 2024 to August 6, 2025. The research method applied was descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The findings indicate that the high temperature of the LNG cargo received was caused by suboptimal execution of the arm cooldown, line cooldown, and tank cooldown procedures, as well as the high ambient temperature in the Bontang area averaging ±37°C. These conditions accelerated the vaporization of LNG cargo inside the tanks, causing pressure to exceed the compressor's capacity and ultimately resulting in a vent out incident. Furthermore, the limited practical experience of the newly appointed Cargo Officer and insufficient familiarity with the mosstype-type vessel's cargo handling system led to delayed decision-making during the emergency. The selected solutions include halting the loading process and coordinating with the terminal to transfer LNG at a lower temperature, as well as providing structured and periodic shore-based training supplemented by an on-the-job training program using the one-to-one coaching method on board.
