Abstract:
The cargo hold structure on a bulk carrier plays an important role in maintaining
operational safety, load distribution, and vessel reliability during cargo loading and
unloading operations. Structural damage such as ladder structure damage and
longitudinal hatch coaming fracture can reduce cargo hold integrity and potentially
disrupt the operational safety of the vessel. This study aims to identify and analyze
the factors causing damage to the cargo hold ladder structure and fractures in the
longitudinal hatch coaming, as well as to determine preventive measures that can be
implemented. The research method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive
method with a fishbone analysis (cause-and-effect diagram) approach. The research
was conducted based on the author’s sea practice experience aboard MV. GOLDEN
ASO, with data collection carried out through observation, documentation and
literature studies. The results indicate that ladder structure damage is influenced by
human, machine, material, method, measurement, and environmental factors, while
longitudinal hatch coaming fractures are influenced by uneven cargo distribution,
weak supervision, deterioration of material quality, and operational environmental
conditions. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to improving
supervision systems, operational safety, and maintenance of cargo hold structures in
order to reduce the potential for structural damage on board ships.
