Grounding is one of the most common types of maritime accidents and has the potential
to cause ship damage, operational disruption, and environmental pollution risks.
Grounding incidents involving LNG carriers have a higher level of risk due to the
hazardous and highly flammable characteristics of the cargo in the event of leakage. This
study aims to analyze the factors causing the grounding of LNG SM. Golden Eagle in the
waters of Sumbawa on March 24, 2025, and to examine efforts to improve the navigation
system in supporting maritime safety.,This study employed a qualitative research method
with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted through field observations,
interviews with ship crews, ship navigation documentation, and analysis of grounding
incident reports. Data analysis was carried out thematically by examining the relationship
between human factors, the utilization of navigation equipment, sailing conditions, and
the implementation of ship navigation procedures,The results of the study indicate that
the grounding incident was not caused by a single factor, but rather by the interaction of
several interrelated factors. The main factors identified include route deviation caused by
sea currents, less optimal bridge watchkeeping supervision, limited utilization of
navigation equipment such as ECDIS, radar, and echo sounder, as well as inconsistencies
in the implementation of passage planning. In addition, the coordination system and
decision-making process on the bridge had not been carried out optimally in responding
to changing sailing conditions,Based on the findings, grounding prevention efforts should
focus on improving the quality of passage planning, strengthening navigation supervision,
optimizing the use of navigation equipment, and increasing the crew’s understanding and
awareness of navigation and sailing conditions. Through the consistent implementation
of these measures, maritime safety is expected to improve and the risk of grounding can
be minimized. |
