The Cargo Water Ingress Sensor is a crucial device on bulk carriers, functioning to detect seawater entry into cargo holds to safeguard cargo integrity and ensure vessel stability. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of maintenance practices for the sensor onboard MV. HL BRAZIL, prompted by incidents of false alarms caused by poor maintenance and insufficient technical understanding among crew members.
This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques such as direct observation, documentation, and literature study conducted during sea practice. Data analysis was carried out using the SWOT approach (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to identify internal and external factors affecting sensor maintenance effectiveness.
The findings indicate that the absence of scheduled inspections, lack of technical familiarization, and low crew understanding were key contributors to sensor malfunction and false alarms. To address these issues, it is recommended to implement regular maintenance schedules, enhance crew technical training, and provide visual technical guides to support independent and sustainable sensor maintenance.
Through the application of appropriate maintenance strategies, the senior is expected to operate optimally and prevent potential cargo damage due to seawater ingress
