Abstract:
"This research was motivated by a significant decline in fresh water production from the
Fresh Water Generator (FWG) unit on CS. GLORY, dropping from a normal capacity
of ±15 tons/day to less than 10 tons/day. This performance decline was characterized
by an unstable system vacuum pressure (<70%). The purpose of this study is to analyze
the factors causing condenser fouling and installation pipe leakage, as well as to
identify the constraints behind the weak implementation of the Planned Maintenance
System (PMS) onboard.
The research Method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study and problem-
solving approach. The data analysis technique applies the Fishbone Diagram
(Ishikawa) to map out the root causes from the aspects of man, Machine, Method, and
environment. Data were obtained through participatory observation of Machine ry
parameters, structured interviews with ship engineers, and documentation studies of the
instruction manual book, engine logbook, and the PMS system.
The results of the study indicated that the primary cause of the decline in FWG
performance was mineral scale accumulation (scaling) on the condenser tubes which
inhibited heat transfer, as well as air infiltration due to pinhole leaks in the outlet ejector
pump pipeline installation. This issue was further aggravated by a reactive maintenance
pattern driven by the heavy operational workload of the engine crew, causing PMS
schedules to be bypassed. To resolve these problems, it is concluded that optimization is
required through periodic chemical, scheduled pipe renewal, early leak detection
utilizing the Soap Bubble Test, and standardizing performance-based maintenance via
Condition Based Monitoring to ensure smooth fresh water supply operations onboard.
