Abstract:
The smooth operation of a ship is highly dependent on the role of the generator, a machine
that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through the principle of
electromagnetic induction according to Faraday's law. On MV. Tanto Nusantara, the
generator serves to supply power for navigation equipment, auxiliary pumps, and domestic
needs. This research focuses on the performance decline of diesel generator No. 1 (Daihatsu
Diesel Yanmar), which was detected through a low exhaust gas temperature in cylinder No.
8 (260O C), indicating combustion failure. The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes
of plunger barrel damage and fuel rack jamming in the Fuel Injection Pump (FIP). Using a
descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation during overhaul,
interviews with the Third Engineer, and a study of the engine's manual documents. The
results of the study reveal that the damage to the plunger barrel was caused by the
component's operating hours exceeding the limit (6,187 hours out of a maximum of 5,000
hours). Additionally, the accumulation of carbon residue caused the fuel rack mechanism to
jam, resulting in suboptimal fuel supply. It is concluded that delays in the Planned
Maintenance System (PMS) lead to a decrease in injection pressure and generator efficiency.
The author suggests disciplined part replacement and routine cleaning to prevent fatal
damage.
