dc.description.abstract This study aims to identify and understand the causes of the lack of familiarity among watchable able seamen (ABs) in the implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) during the lashing process, as well as the factors contributing to the ABs’ lack of understanding regarding the use of lashing equipment aboard the MV Pan Optimum. The research method employed is a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. Data collection was conducted through direct observation during sea practice, interviews with the ship’s crew and officers, as well as a review of documentation related to lashing procedures and workplace safety on the ship. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions supported by the 5 Whys method. The results of the study indicate that the lack of familiarity among watchkeepers in the implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) is caused by the busy operational schedule at the port, resulting in briefings, equipment checks, and workplace safety procedures often being neglected. Additionally, the watch crew’s limited experience led to a lack of understanding regarding the proper use of lashing equipment and work procedures in accordance with safety standards. This study also indicates that suboptimal oversight of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) resulted from the absence of structured work instructions from the stevedore and weak supervision during the lashing process. These conditions lead to work errors, such as the use of inappropriate personal protective equipment, improper lashing techniques, and unsafe equipment operation, thereby increasing the risk of workplace accidents and cargo damage on board. Therefore, improving workplace safety in the log lashing process must focus on enhancing the crew’s familiarity with the Safety Management System (SMS), strengthening oversight of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and consistently implementing a workplace safety management system onboard the vessel. en_US
