Abstract:
Hydraulic cranes are the main equipment used to support smooth loading and unloading
activities on board ships. Optimal hydraulic crane performance is essential to ensure that
loading and unloading operations run effectively, safely, and efficiently. However, during
sea practice on MV.Bulk Java, several problems were identified, including the failure of the
Steel Plate slewing brake and inadequate maintenance of the hydraulic crane, especially on
the hose and hydraulic oil filter components. These damages disrupted crane operations and
hindered loading and unloading activities. This study aims to determine the causes of Steel
Plate slewing brake failure and the inadequate maintenance of the hydraulic crane on
MV.Bulk Java. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection
techniques through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature study.
The results showed that the failure of the Steel Plate slewing brake was caused by delays in
spare part replacement and inadequate periodic inspections. In addition, the lack of routine
inspections on hoses and filters caused hose leakage and the accumulation of metal
particles and dirt in the hydraulic oil tank. Efforts to overcome these problems were carried
out through spare part replacement, improving routine maintenance, and consistently
implementing preventive maintenance to prevent recurring damage and support smooth
loading and unloading operations on board the ship.
