Air compressor is an auxiliary machinery on board a ship that functions to suction
atmospheric air and compress it into air receivers until it reaches high pressure to support
the main engine starting process. This study aims to analyze the causes of air compressor
damage and its impact on the ship maneuvering system on KM. Leuser, considering the
vital role of compressed air in ensuring smooth vessel maneuvers. Using a descriptive
qualitative method based on observations during sea practice from August 2024 to August
2025, the research results identified two main issues: the occurrence of cracks in the
piston due to contaminated lubricating oil with water, and a decrease in the air receiver
charging performance caused by carbon deposit buildup on the suction valve. This
condition caused the air receiver charging time to increase from the normal duration of
12–15 minutes to 25 minutes, directly hindering the main engine's readiness during
maneuvers such as unberthing. Problem-solving efforts included replacing damaged
components, routine cleaning of valves, and implementing systematic maintenance based
on the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) to ensure optimal compressed air availability.
This research is expected to provide an understanding of compressor functions and
routine maintenance of the lubrication system and mechanical components to prevent
operational delays and ensure maritime safety. |
