| dc.description.abstract | This research was prompted by the critical issue of water accumulation found within the cargo holds of MV. Kartini Samudra during coal discharging operations at Tanjung Jati Port in September 2024. Such water ingress poses a significant threat as it causes coal to become wet and clumped, leading to cargo depreciation and potential financial losses for both the shipping company and the vessel owner. This study aims to analyze the primary causes of water leakage and the specific factors contributing to the functional deterioration of the hatch covers. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through firsthand observations during sea project (PRALA), supplemented by documentation and literature reviews. The findings indicate that the leakage originated from severe corrosion on the upper edges of the hatch covers, which compromised their watertight and weathertight integrity. This condition was further aggravated by worn-out locking mechanisms and degraded rubber packing, largely due to the vessel’s advancing age. The study concludes that the hatch cover's failure stems from inconsistent maintenance practices that did not strictly adhere to the Planned Maintenance System (PMS). To prevent future occurrences, it is highly recommended to conduct regular leak tests and ensure systematic lubrication of all mechanical components to maintain robust cargo protection. | en_US |
