Abstract:
The injector is a vital component of the main engine that functions to atomize fuel into
the combustion chamber to ensure optimal combustion. Damage to the injector can result
in incomplete combustion, leading to reduced engine performance, increased fuel
consumption, and higher exhaust gas emissions. This study aims to analyze the causes of
main engine injector damage on board MT. Griya Sunda and its impact on engine
performance.This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected
through direct onboard observation, interviews with engine officers, and a literature study
related to marine fuel injection systems. The collected data were analyzed to identify the
causes of injector damage as well as corrective and preventive measures.The results
indicate that injector damage on the main engine of MT. Griya Sunda is mainly caused
by poor fuel quality, carbon deposit formation on the injector nozzle, and suboptimal
maintenance practices due to limited spare parts and time constraints. The impact of this
condition includes reduced engine power and increased fuel consumption. Therefore,
strict fuel quality control, routine injector maintenance in accordance with the Planned
Maintenance System, and adequate spare part support from the company are necessary to
maintain optimal main engine performance.
