This research is motivated by the critical importance of a reliable accommodation cooling
system MV. HMM HANBADA to maintain the productivity and well-being of the crew
during international shipping operations. The primary issues analyzed are the decline in
cooling efficiency caused by two crucial factors: the degradation of condenser
performance and the formation of frost on the evaporator pipes. Through a qualitative
descriptive method with direct observation during sea trials, it was found that the decrease
in condenser performance was triggered by the accumulation of mud and dirt within the
cooling pipes and unstable seawater pressure due to installation leaks, which hindered the
optimal heat exchange process. On the other hand, the formation of frost on the evaporator
was caused by excessive outside air infiltration carrying moisture into the cooling room,
exacerbated by saturated filter dryers and mechanical damage to compressor components.
The impact of these disturbances was a significant increase in room temperature above
the comfort standard of 22°C–28°C, which resulted in physical fatigue, sleep deprivation,
and decreased concentration for the crew members. As a solution, this study recommends
the implementation of stricter routine maintenance in accordance with the Planned
Maintenance System (PMS) schedule, periodic condenser cleaning every three months,
replacement of saturated filter components, as well as consistent defrosting procedures
and monitoring of refrigerant levels through the sight glass. These preventive measures
are vital to ensure that the auxiliary machinery systems remain fully functional to support
the safety and smooth operation of the vessel under various extreme environmental
conditions. |
