Abstract:
This study discusses the optimization of Inert Gas System (IGS) maintenance as an effort
to support occupational safety during cargo discharging operations on board MT. Griya
Cirebon. The IGS is an essential safety system on tanker vessels that functions to reduce
oxygen levels inside cargo tanks in order to prevent the risk of fire and explosion in
accordance with the provisions of SOLAS 1974 and IMO standards. The research
problem arose when disturbances occurred in several IGS components, namely the inert
gas fan which did not operate optimally and the deck water seal water level which was
below the normal limit, causing delays in cargo discharging operations and potentially
creating explosion hazards. These conditions indicate that maintenance practices,
inspections, and the deck crew’s understanding of IGS operational procedures still need
improvement. This research employed a qualitative method using a case study approach
and fishbone analysis to identify the factors causing disruptions in the IGS from the
aspects of human resources, methods, equipment, and maintenance. The results of this
study are expected to provide practical solutions for improving the effectiveness of IGS
maintenance and supporting the implementation of safe, efficient, and procedure-
compliant cargo discharging operations on board.
