ANALISIS PENGGUNAAN ANCHOR WINDLASS GUNA MENDUKUNG OPERASIONAL KAPAL SAAT BERLABUH JANGKAR DI MV. GLOVIS DAYLIGHT

Abstract

Ship operations during anchoring are highly dependent on the performance of deck machinery systems, particularly the anchor windlass. This system plays a crucial role in withstanding the tension of the anchor chain and ensuring the vessel can anchor safely, while maintaining the ship's position against excessive movement caused by extreme weather conditions. This study aims to identify and analyze the root causes of operational failures, specifically the damage to the windlass motor ball bearings due to chain tension exceeding design capacity limits, as well as severe wear on the chain stopper bearing surface triggered by repetitive impacts and shock loads. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using the Fishbone Analysis approach, based on the author's sea project experience (Praktik Laut) aboard MV GLOVIS DAYLIGHT. During the internship, cases of anchor dragging and a breakdown of the port-side windlass motor were identified, caused by heavy swells and strong winds in the waters of Port Kembla, Australia. The results of this research are expected to provide effective handling and problem-solving practices through the implementation of a VFD-based Load Monitoring System to dampen shock loads and the use of the Hard-facing Coating method to increase the durability of the chain stopper material. These mitigation steps are expected to prevent premature mechanical damage, maintain the smoothness of anchoring operations, and ensure ship safety.
