Abstract:
Boilers are vital auxiliary machinery on board ships that function to produce steam for various operational needs, such as fuel heating, water heating, and other utility systems. The reliability of boiler performance is highly dependent on the combustion system, particularly the pilot burner and main burner. Inadequate maintenance of these components may lead to combustion failure, delayed boiler start-up, increased fuel consumption, and potential safety hazards.
This study aims to analyze the actual condition of the pilot burner and main burner and to evaluate maintenance optimization efforts on the boiler of MV Habco Ankaa. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through direct observation in the engine room, interviews with engine crew members, and documentation review including engine log books, maintenance records, and manufacturer manuals.
The results indicate that the main causes of boiler combustion problems are clogged burner nozzles, improper pilot burner electrode spacing, and the lack of effective preventive maintenance implementation. Maintenance optimization through routine cleaning, electrode adjustment according to standards, and the application of a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) has proven effective in in improving flame stability, facilitating smoother boiler start-up, and enhancing combustion efficiency.
In conclusion, systematic and continuous maintenance of the pilot burner and main burner plays a crucial role in maintaining boiler reliability, improving ship operational efficiency, and ensuring engine room safety.
