OPTIMALI PEMELIHARAAN TANGKI KARGO GUNA MENCEGAH TERJADINYA KONTAMINASI PADA MUATAN MINYAK JADI DI KAPAL MT.OLYVIA

Abstract

This study discusses the factors causing contamination of refined petroleum cargo and the preventive measures applied on board MT. Olyvia. Cargo contamination is a critical issue in tanker operations as it can reduce cargo quality, lead to cargo rejection by terminals, and cause operational as well as financial losses. This research was conducted based on the author’s sea training experience as a deck cadet on board MT. Olyvia, focusing on the loading and handling of Bio Solar B35 and Pertalite cargoes. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Primary data were obtained through direct observation of tank cleaning, tank drying, cargo readiness inspections, and interviews with officers and crew involved in cargo operations. Secondary data were collected from ship documents, operational manuals, and relevant literature related to refined oil cargo handling. The results indicate that the main factors contributing to potential cargo contamination on MT. Olyvia include suboptimal tank cleaning and drying processes, insufficient thoroughness during final tank inspections, and limitations in operational coordination and supervision. Preventive measures include optimizing tank cleaning procedures in accordance with established standards, strengthening officer supervision, implementing layered inspection systems, and enhancing crew competence and discipline. Through consistent procedural implementation and improved operational management, the risk of refined oil cargo contamination on board MT. Olyvia can be effectively minimized.
