Grand ivan flamming, 2025. “Optimization of Cargo Hold Cleaning Impelementation to Minimize Work Accidents on MV. Federal Oak” The cargo hold cleaning process is a crucial part of operational activities on bulk carrier vessels, especially before changing cargo types. This study aims to analyze and optimize the cleaning procedures of cargo holds to minimize work-related accidents caused by improper implementation of safety protocols. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through direct observation, interviews with ship crew, and documentation during onboard practice aboard MV. Federal Oak. The findings indicate that key safety procedures, such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), pre-cleaning safety briefings, and officer supervision, are often inconsistently implemented. This increases the risk of workplace accidents, as illustrated by an incident in which a crew member sustained a serious injury due to improper footwear. Using the 5 Why Analysis approach, the root cause was identified as weak SOP implementation and lack of regular evaluations by ship management. The study recommends improvements in procedural clarity, enhanced safety awareness programs, and the provision of adequate equipment to ensure both operational efficiency and crew safety. Through such optimizations, the overall awareness and adherence to safety protocols during cargo hold cleaning operations are expected to improve significantly.
