Mirpan Suandi. 2025. "Enhancing Discipline in Bridge Watchkeeping to Support Safety
and Security on the M.T. Lamiwuri 01"
The practical experience at sea aboard the M.T. Lamiwuri 01 revealed several serious
issues that could potentially endanger the safety and security of navigation, including
vessel collisions and suboptimal implementation of watchkeeping duties. The collision
occurred due to a lack of vigilance and preparedness of the crew in handling emergency
situations, as well as negligence in safety procedures and inadequate supervision. In
addition, ineffective watchkeeping practices were also a major contributing factor to
these incidents. This study aims to identify the factors that influence the discipline and
performance of the crew in carrying out watchkeeping duties. The method used is a
qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including direct observation and
document study related to the vessel's operational procedures. Data was gathered from
crew members, watch officers, and documentation of routine drills and watchkeeping
records. The results of the study indicate that a lack of understanding of safety
procedures, limited routine training, and low individual motivation are key reasons for
the lack of discipline among the crew in performing watchkeeping duties. Furthermore,
ineffective communication, indecisive leadership, and the physical and mental condition
of the crew also affect discipline in executing watch responsibilities. This study
recommends the need for enhanced periodic training, regular performance evaluations,
and improvements in communication and leadership systems to improve crew discipline,
thereby supporting optimal maritime safety and security. |
