dc.description.abstract Tamba, Yoel Antonius. 364210889. 2025. “Evaluation of Magnetic Compass Effectiveness as an Alternative Navigation Method in the Event of Gyro Compass Failure on Board MT Aqila S.” The gyro compass serves as the primary navigational instrument on board ships, providing highly accurate true heading data and acting as a critical reference for integrated systems such as autopilot and RADAR. However, when a gyro compass fails, it can significantly compromise the safety of navigation. This study is based on the author’s firsthand experience during sea practice (PRALA) on board the MT Aqila S, where a gyro compass malfunction disrupted the autopilot system and required the vessel to be operated manually using a magnetic compass. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the magnetic compass as an alternative navigational tool during emergencies involving gyro compass failure. The study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection methods including observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the failure of the gyro compass had a considerable impact on the performance of other electronic navigation systems and increased the crew’s workload when manual navigation was required. The magnetic compass proved to be an effective emergency backup; however, its usage demands specific skills, regular training, and routine maintenance to ensure reliability and accuracy. This research recommends the regular implementation of safety meetings and familiarization programs, as well as consistent maintenance and the provision of backup systems such as an additional gyro compass, to maintain navigation safety and operational efficiency at sea. en_US
