This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS)
on the hydraulic pipes of the hatch cover aboard the MV GLOVIS DESIRE and its impact
on the smoothness of cargo handling operations. Hydraulic pipes, which serve as
conduits for high-pressure fluid, play a vital role in the operation of hatch covers. Based
on observations during sea practice, it was found that suboptimal maintenance of
hydraulic pipes frequently led to leakage, disrupting the loading and unloading process
and potentially causing losses for the company.
The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using data collection techniques
such as direct observation, interviews, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using
the fishbone (cause-effect diagram) method and the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth)
method. The findings indicate that the primary causes of hydraulic pipe leaks include a
lack of routine maintenance in accordance with PMS, insufficient education and training
for the ship’s crew, and external factors such as extreme weather changes that accelerate
pipe corrosion.
The study concludes that optimal implementation of PMS can prevent damage to the
hydraulic system, ensure smooth hatch cover operation, and minimize disruptions in
cargo handling. Therefore, increased socialization, training, and supervision of PMS
implementation on board are necessary to support operational efficiency and work safety.
