Abstract

This research is motivated by the crucial role of cargo hold readiness in ensuring the smooth loading and unloading process aboard the MV. Noah Fortuna. During the onboard training period, several key issues were identified, including the lack of updated cleaning equipment and low attention to detail among crew members in preparing cargo holds— both of which contributed to delays in cargo operations. This study aims to identify the root causes of these issues and propose optimal solutions to enhance operational efficiency. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing data collection methods such as observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. The results revealed that the renewal of cleaning equipment is often hindered by company policies that limit equipment updates to voyages bound for Java Island, along with the Chief Officer’s lack of initiative in submitting requisition requests. Additionally, the crew’s low precision was attributed to excessive workloads and limited experience on bulk carrier vessels. Proposed solutions include involving the bosun in equipment inventory, enforcing more consistent requisition practices by the Chief Officer, allowing rest time prior to cleaning operations, providing hold-cleaning manuals to inexperienced crew, and offering motivational support such as extra food. By optimizing the preparation of cargo holds, the loading and unloading processes can be performed more efficiently, reducing delays and enhancing the shipping company’s overall reputation.
