Abstract:
This research is based on a phenomenon where many ships rely heavily on
freshwater supply from land, due to the fact that the fresh water generator on board cannot produce freshwater optimally because of inadequate maintenance and operation, as well as interruptions and damage, or low efficiency of the evaporator in the fresh water
generator. Therefore, the role of the evaporator greatly affects the distillation performance
in the fresh water generator system as it directly influences the sea water evaporation
process that will be separated into fresh water, with several impacts such as heating and
evaporation processes, efficient heat, quality of fresh water, proper vacuum creation, and
increased production capacity. Overall, the quality and efficiency evaporator directly
affects the overall performance of the fresh water generator, both in terms of production
capacity, energy consumption, and the quality of fresh water produced.
The problem formulation in this research is what causes salt buildup and crusting
in the evaporator, what causes the evaporator to be less clean, and how to properly
maintain the evaporator. This study uses a qualitative approach with a type of field
research. Data collection techniques are through observation and documentation. Data
analysis techniques include data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the research conducted, optimal distillation processes in the fresh water generator require maintenance and monitoring of the condition of the fresh water generator unit, which should be carried out continuously and sustainably. Thus, it is hoped that the working condition will be optimalize FWG unit must always be
maintained. Maintenance should also always be accompanied by discipline from
maintenance operators so that the maintenance runs smoothly and correctly. Therefore, a
harmonious and complementary cooperation should be created to carry out solid and
satisfactory maintenance of the machinery on board. Maintenance of the fresh water
generator is an important aspect in maintaining the efficiency and performance of the
cooling system as well as the industrial processes that use the evaporator.
